About Nameri National Park

Tiger in Ranthambor National Park Cuddled in the foot hills of the Eastern Himalaya in the Sonitpur District of Assam,Nameri National Park is the most scenic of all the national parks of Assam. Covering an area of 200sq km. Nameri provides shelter to a number of endangered species and qualify as an elephant reserve. In fact it is one of the richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life in the world. On the Northeastern boarder of the park joins the Pakhui (Pakke) Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh. The park is conflicting by the river Jia - Bhoroli and its tributaries namely the Diji, Dinai, Doigurung, Nameri, Dikorai, Kharietc. A few jheels (during the rainy seasons) also dot the area. The different river and the tributaries display devilish look during summer due to incessant down pour. It is in the year 1998 Nameri was officially declared as a National park.

Flora and fauna in Nameri National Park
Moist Mixed, Deciduous Forests' is the major forest over here. There are Tropical evergreen and Semi-evergreen forests mingle with the moist deciduous forests while cane and bamboo brakes and narrow strips of open grassland can be found along the many rivers. Most popular plant species include: Albizzia lucida, Albizzia procera, Amoora wallichii, Artocarpus chaplasha, Baccaurea sapida, Bischofia javanica, Bombax ceiba, Canarium strictum, Castanopsis indica, Cordia dichotoma, Cinnamomum cecicodaphnea, Dendrocalamus hamiltonii, Dillenia indica, Duabanga grandiflora, Duabanga sonneratoides, Dysoxylum procerum, Endospermum chinense, Lagerstroemia flos-reginae, Litsea sebifera, Mesua ferrea, Morus roxburghii, Premna bengalensis, Pseudostachyum polymorphum, Pterospermum acerifolium, Sapium baccatum, Shorea assamica, Sterculia hamiltonii, Syzygium cumini, Terminalia citrina, Terminalia myriocarpa, Trewia nudiflora and Vatica lanceaefolia. Nameri is considered as one of the richest biodiversity hotspot of the world.
This hot spot is also famous for elephants and other wild animals like Assamese macaque, wild dog, Bengal fox, jungle cat, hog deer, mouse deer, leopard, tiger, fishing cat, wild boar, Indian porcupine, Indian pangolin, flying squirrel etc. And the birds like birds and insects like white winged duck, drongos, beautiful nuthatch, grey headed fishing eagle and many more insect life like butterflies, moths, spiders, ants and termites. Nameri is a treat for any entomologist. The movement of the herds of animals is an amazing sight of the Nameri. Sometimes they trespass in human inhabited villages which has attracted the attention of wildlife conservationists worldwide.

Nameri is a place where you can enjoy to the fullest. A trip to this park provides ample opportunity for water sports activities like rafting, swimming, sunbathing and angling. Anglers find this place an excellent place for fishing. The thatched hut Eco Camp adjacent to Nameri National Park offers an opportunity to live with nature. So do not miss to spend the night in this heaven of North east. Last but not least elephant ride in the Nameri is another attraction to the tourists.

Best Time to Visit Nameri
Ideal time to visit the place is November To March. After March due to the excessive rainfall it becomes difficult to explore the park totally.

How to Get there
Air : The nearest airport is Saloni about 10-km from Tezpur, in Sonitpur district.

Rail : Nearest Railway Station is Rangapara, which is 60-Kms from Bhalukpong, and is 21-km from the park, in Sonitpur district. Nameri is well connected with the network of Indian Railways.

Road : Nameri National Park is well connected by the local and national highways that connect it with all the major cities of Assam. However, regular buses ply to and from Tezpur.
