About Hemis High Altitude National Park
Tiger in Ranthambor National Park
The name itself suggest the altitude of the park. Yes, the Hemis High Altitude National park in Ladakh in the state Jammu and Kashmir is situated at an altitude ranging between 3,300 and 6,000 m above the sea level. It is the largest national park in the north of Himalayas which includes catchments of the lower Zanskar River, from its confluence with the Markha river to its meeting with the Indus. It is named after Buddhist monastery, the Hemis Gompa extends over 4,100 sq km in the trans Himalayan region of Ladakh. It is an wonderful treasure trove to the wild life lovers. The land scape of snow caped mountains along with a number of species of endangered mammals including the Snow Leopard Hemis High Altitude National Park is an ideal spot for dream holidays.

Flora and Fauna
The terrain of the area is very rocky and thin soil cover which results in poor vegetative growth. There are dry alpine pastures present in sheltered locations. After the melting of the snow the grass growth is relatively rapid.

It is an abode to the more than 200 snow leopards, which has given this park, a status of Snow Leopard Capital of India. Other animals one can spot here are Argali (Great Tibetan Sheep), Bharal (Blue Sheep), Shapu (Ladakhi Urial), and livestock. A small number of the Asiatic Ibex is also present in Hemis. It is the only refuge in India containing the Shapu.The Tibetan Wolf,the Eurasian Brown Bear (endangered in India), and the Red Fox are also present in Hemis. There are small mammals which include the Himalayan Marmot, Mountain Weasel and the Himalayan Mouse Hare can be found here.
It is an excellent place to study the birds of prey like Golden Eagle, Lammergeier vulture, and the Himalayan Griffon vulture. It provides an excellent opportunity to witness the several Tibetan species which are not common in other parts of India which include Brown Accentor, Robin Accentor, Tickell's Leaf Warbler, Streaked Rosefinch, Tibetan Snowfinch, Chukar, Fork-tailed Swift, Red-billed Chough, Himalayan Snowcock, and the Fire-fronted Serin etc.

Trekking, is the another attractions here unlike other national park. At such high altitude jeep safari is not feasible hence it is always better to explore the place and spot the animals by enthralling trekking with the help of some good guides. The trekking rout gives an ample opportunity to interact with different species of birds. It contains many camping sites too. For the wildlife savvy, Hemis National Park offers an different world of wild life amidst the snow caped mountains.

Best Time to Visit Hemis High Altitude National Park
The appropriate time to visit the park for mammal viewing is September to May and for bird watching March to May and September to December.

How to Get there
Air : The nearest airport is Leh, which is connected to Delhi, Chandigarh, Srinagar, and Jammu.

Rail : The nearest railstation is Jammu, situated at a distance of around 690 km. Jammu is connected to all parts of India.

Road : The Leh-Srinagar National Highway officially opens every year from May 15 to November 15(depending on weather condition). The distances of some important destinations from Leh by road are: Srinagar, 434 km; Kargil, 230 km; Manali, 497 km; and Keylong, 380 km.
